’Explore the world of Americana and Roots Music from Country and Bluegrass to Rhythm and Blues with the DIY Rock Shop tutors and special guest musicians from both the local and international music scene! During the week youll have the opportunity to form your very own band, work with acclaimed song-writers and musicians to develop a set of both original and classic material, record in the studio, catch performances from some of the worlds finest Americana artists and finally, showcase your work as part of the Southern Fried Festival Line Up.’
As part of the week we’ve teamed up with the Southern Fried Festival crew and Horsecross to offer a whole host of amazing workshops and events including:
- Day of song-writing with the internationally acclaimed and truly wonderful singer songwriter, Gabriel Kelley. Raised in Georgia, Gabriel spent several years as a professional song-writer on Nashville’s ‘Music Row’ and is an expert on the ‘Do It Yourself’ ethos having funded his own first album through a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign! - Bluegrass & ‘old-time’ session with mandolin expert, Laura-Beth Salter and hugely talented fiddler, Laura Wilkie. http://laurabethsalter.com/
- Soul Band Workshop with ‘The Honeybee of Soul’, Cyndi Cain and her band. Hailing from Canada, Cyndi has shared the stage with legends such as Aretha Franklin and Michael Buble – you can find more info on Cyndi and her music at www.facebook.com/missCyndiCain
- Opportunities to attend selected shows from the Southern Fried Festival Line-Up.

Red Pine Timber Company
Local living legend and Americana-expert, Mr Munro will be spending some time with us during the week to offer support and lend us some of his guitar-lickin’ finger pickin’ expertise! His band ‘Red Pine Timber Company’ have recently released their debut album to rave reviews from across the globe. You can find out more about the band and their music at:
Donny McElligott – Singer/Songwriter/Guitar
Known widely as the human juke-box Donny will be popping in to hang out with the bands, answer your questions and show us how to impart some Americana-style magic to our music! All currently promoting their hugely successful debut album, you can check out the the New Madrids music online at:

To round off the week – (And possibly the most exciting part!!) – you’ll have the opportunity to go busking on the morning of Saturday 26th July in Perth city centre before showcasing your weeks work by opening for the fabulous Red Pine Timber Company on Southern Fried’s brand new open-air main stage at Perth Concert Hall!
Southern Fried Rock Shop is open to young musicians aged 10 – 16. The main DIY Rock Shop sessions will be based at Clearwater Studios, Perth between 10 – 4pm. However, certain workshops may take place within these times at Horsecross Venues. Due to the packed schedule there may also be some slightly later finishes during the week but we will inform of these well in advance.
Southern Fried Rock Shop runs from Monday 21st – Friday 25th July with opportunities to attend selected Southern Fried Shows in the evenings over the festival weekend. The busking session will take place on the morning of Saturday 26th July with final performances on Southern Fried’s Outdoor Main Stage on the Saturday afternoon.
The cost for Southern Fried Rock Shop is £150 per person inclusive.
